MARKUS LÜPERTZ (born 25 April 1941) is a German painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and writer. He is one of the best-known German contemporary artists. His subjects are characterized by suggestive power and archaic monumentality. Lüpertz insists on capturing the object of representation with an archetypal statement of his existence. His art work is associated to neo-expressionism. Known for his eccentricity, German press has stylized him as a "painter prince".
Works by Lüpertz can be seen in numerous museums and public collections, including the Kunstmuseum Walter in Augsburg, the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg, the Overbeckgesellschaft in Lübeck, the Haus der Kunst in Munich, the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, the Kunsthalle Bern, the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, at the Landesmuseum Munich, at the Moderna Museet Stockholm, at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire in Geneva, at the Musée d'Art et d'Industrie in Saint-Etienne, at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in Paris, at the Nationalgalerie in Berlin, at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, at the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, at the Tel Aviv Museum, and at the Saint Louis Art Museum.
